In time for testing

September 1, 2017

“There is a sales ban on one of our products right now because we have to sign the ‘Declaration of Conformity,’” René Jørgensen, program manager at Danfoss, explains one week before the new Radio Equipment Directive, RED, was enforced as the only directive in the field.

The process of harmonizing the old directives under the new RED dragged on, and only in the beginning of 2017 did it become clear which standards Danfoss needed to test their products against. The accredited test laboratories got busy, and so did René.

Relatively small but very flexible

EKTOS had just taken over the former SP Danmark A/S when a deal was made with Danfoss. In order to work as efficiently as possible, a couple of our test engineers from Viborg went to the test laboratory in Copenhagen to assist in operating the equipment. René Jørgensen appreciated being met with the flexibility, “You had an employee who said, ‘OK, I’ll work during the holidays.’ That kind of attitude was precious to me because I gained a day and you utilized the test equipment in a period when most people in Denmark had a day off.”

René’s experience illustrates how EKTOS TRS A/S is positioned in the market. “We are relatively small, which means that we can maneuver flexibly and quickly to meet our customers’ needs,” says Kennet Palm, managing director of EKTOS TRS A/S.

“Are you sure the phone should be placed inside the test chamber?”

Misunderstandings are more likely to occur at stressful times, and a misunderstanding about a test setup resulted in a test failure at another laboratory. When René brought the product to EKTOS TRS A/S, the test engineers investigated how the product was supposed to be used, and then he asked René, “Are you sure that the phone should be placed inside the test chamber?” That proved not to be the case, so when they ran the test with the phone outside of the test chamber the product passed the test and René was finally able to sign the necessary Declaration of Conformity.

Our test engineers have a background as electronics developers, which means that they can see beyond the test itself and understand how the product should work in real life. Our engineers therefore excel in supporting our clients when issues emerge during testing.

Does your product contain radio transmitters or receivers?

The new Radio Equipment Directive is relevant for many manufacturers because products often contain some kind of radio equipment. Contact EKTOS if you need assistance in evaluating whether or not the requirements for your product have been changed. In most cases, the new requirements can be verified and documented with just a few tests.
