Serenergy
Power design and prototype testing
September 28, 2016
In Denmark it can be difficult to find competent engineers within the field of power electronics, particularly if the resources are needed on the terms of a consultancy or a project instead of long term employment. In EKTOS we have built up a strong team of particularly qualified engineers and project managers who not only have a solid theoretical knowledge within the field of power electronics, but who also have many years of experience developing cost-effective solutions that work and that are reliable.
In EKTOS we have carried out several large scale projects regarding energy conversion. One of our customers is the Danish company Serenergy, that has been developing methanol fuel cell systems since 2006. We have worked with Serenergy for about three years.
We have expertise within energy conversion
Serenergy has drawn on our expertise when they needed extra hands or a particularly skilled expert. Morten Sørensen, Development Manager at Serenergy, explains how the cooperation started: “We concluded pretty fast, that hiring an expert is not something you just do, because the person should have a certain level of experience with production. We didn’t just need to make fundamental circuits, but it was necessary to be able to apply the theoretical knowledge in practice and make a product, which could in fact be produced. That’s when we got hold of EKTOS.”

Serenergy has worked closely with one of our most skillful power engineers since we started our cooperation three years ago, and since March this year they have chosen to in-source him which means that he now has relocated to Denmark and works for Serenergy 80% of his working week. “He’s more skilled than what you can expect”, says Morten Sørensen, “this means that we move very fast when he’s with us.”
Earlier Serenergy drew on our resources in Ukraine. We had bought equipment which our engineers could work with on distance. Morten Sørensen says that our engineers have been good at creating results, even though the equipment, they were using, was not as powerful as what was used at Serenergy’s location.
High power equals high design standards
“Working with power electronics poses certain demands to the design, because high power means that the electronics get warm fast”, explains project manager at EKTOS Morten Aage Hansen. “You need efficient design in order to minimize losses, meaning, with good design, you will need to get rid of as little heat as possible.” Except from heat it is also necessary to be attentive to the demands posed by the EMC directive when working with power electronics, Morten Aage Hansen continues. He elaborates by explaining that electromagnetic disturbances easily can happen if a product is switched on and off rapidly.
Because we at EKTOS have a well equipped test lab and experienced test engineers, we can ensure that our designs meet the standards and that we can obtain certifications from the relevant authorities. We furthermore have the opportunity to test our prototypes during the development process and thereby avoid unpleasant surprises late in the process.

Our dedicated team of engineers appreciate development projects within the field of power electronics, and because our setup allows us to work with skilled and highly educated Ukrainian engineers, we can offer our services at a lower price than what a similarly skilled and experienced engineer in Western Europe would charge for the same service. You are welcome to contact us, if you want to hear more about what we can offer, or if you have a challenge we can help you solve.
