Airtame
Testing complex radio communication
October 22, 2018
Company
Airtame, a Danish-American start-up, focuses on creating wireless HDMI solutions that support seamless screen sharing across devices, primarily for educational and business environments.
Their signature product, Airtame 2, offers high-quality wireless transmission through dual-band frequencies to enhance connectivity and reliability. Airtame’s drive for cutting-edge performance requires both robust security and certification to meet international standards.
Challenge
For Airtame, achieving smooth and stable wireless connections in busy environments—such as classrooms and offices—while meeting strict regulatory standards proved essential.
Due to Airtame 2’s use of both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio bands, it needed to meet complex compliance standards under the EU Radio Equipment Directive.
This classification required a thorough, dual approach to testing and certification, ensuring Airtame 2 could perform reliably while adhering to regulatory requirements across multiple regions.
Solution
To address Airtame’s dual-band certification needs, EKTOS used its expertise and proximity to Airtame’s Copenhagen office, supporting the type approval of Airtame 2 as two distinct components under the EU Radio Equipment Directive.
This approach ensured rigorous compliance testing for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, addressing each band’s specific technical demands.
Kennet Palm, Head of EKTOS Test & Reliability Services, explained, “Airtame 2 is a sophisticated product handling extensive data transmission. Its resilience under diverse conditions necessitated the adoption of two distinct transmission channels.”
Airtame’s close collaboration with EKTOS and additional partners, RTX and Cypress, was instrumental in aligning development with evolving compliance standards.
Kendra Bannister, Hardware Team Lead at Airtame, noted, “EKTOS’ proximity to our main office in Copenhagen and partnership with RISE in Sweden made them a flexible partner that could adapt to our development schedule and provide 5 GHz testing services.”
Results
The Airtame 2 achieved certification for both the EU and US markets, allowing it to be sold in over 80 countries, thanks to DANAK’s affiliation with the ILAC MRA. The product’s ability to operate across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands ensures a consistent, reliable user experience, even in high-demand environments with significant wireless congestion.
Reflecting on the partnership, Airtame’s CTO and Co-founder, Attila Sukosd, remarked, “EKTOS has been an exceptional certification partner. They brought a wealth of knowledge on the latest standards and technical expertise, which was invaluable for certifying a product with complex RF and PSU components. Their feedback helped us make Airtame 2 a better product in the end.”
This collaboration has equipped Airtame 2 with the performance and certifications needed to support robust connections for users worldwide.
