TROX Auranor and EKTOS have collaborated to develop an innovative concept for the installation of ventilation systems. This concept involves the use of a smartphone app and a sensor, which makes the installation process more precise, easier, and faster.
For installers and technicians, their smartphone has become an essential tool, just like a hammer and screwdriver. And now, with the new smartphone-based concept developed by TROX and EKTOS, their smartphone has become even more indispensable. This concept enables the calibration of ventilation panels, which ensures good air quality and correct air temperature in individual rooms, such as in an office building.
No more climbing ladders
In the past, the installer had to manually climb a ladder to configure the controller that regulates the air stream from the ventilation panel. Additionally, they had to handle a measuring device to detect the ventilation parameters for the room they were working in. However, with the new controlling component, the installer can now perform the job using their smartphone. This not only makes installation easier and faster but also automates the technical documentation.
Pressure sensor for fine-tuning
According to Jette Freiberg, the project manager at EKTOS, the ventilation system is composed of a controller integrated into the ceiling-mounted ventilation panel. The controller features an air pressure sensor that provides measurement data for the final adjustment of the two motors that control the valve inside the ventilation panel.
In addition to the controller, a smartphone app has been designed for the installer’s use in fine-tuning the system. The smartphone and the controller communicate via Bluetooth technology.
Experience matters
TROX Auranor chose to collaborate with EKTOS due to their extensive expertise in designing controls for HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) and in-depth knowledge of wireless in-door connectivity. EKTOS also handled the entire project in-house, from idea generation to development, testing, and manufacturing. The new controlling component had to fit into the existing TROX product portfolio, as Jette Freiberg explains.
Additionally, they were asked to develop a new and innovative interface for the installer. The solution was specified in collaboration with the customer, with an emphasis on an intuitive and effortless user experience. The wireless connection between the smartphone and controller had to be secure and stable.
EKTOS has experienced hardware engineers who have optimized antennas for in-door environments for many years. Additionally, they have facilities for antenna measurement. Therefore, they could deliver the requested connectivity with the first prototype. This meant that the user experience could be tested in the specific environment where the installer works while calibrating the system.
Tight schedule
The project had a tight launch schedule for the new system at a trade fair just a few months away. However, EKTOS was able to handle this additional challenge efficiently thanks to its in-house prototyping facilities and certification capabilities for North America.
TROX Auranor also trusted EKTOS with manufacturing the new controller in its sister factory TECHTO Electronics in Ukraine, including producing equipment for programming and final testing.

TROX Auranor og EKTOS har udviklet en ny og innovativ metode til at installere ventilationssystemer: En smartphone-app og en sensor gør monteringen mere præcis, nemmere og hurtigere.
For de fleste håndværkere er mobiltelefonen et vigtigt værktøj på linje med hammer og skruetrækker. Det gælder også de montører, der opsætter ventilationssystemer fra norske TROX Auranor. For dem vil mobilen fremover være helt uundværlig: TROX har nu sammen med EKTOS udviklet et smartphone-baseret koncept til kalibrering af de loftsmonterede ventilationspaneler, der sørger for god udluftning og korrekt lufttemperatur i hvert enkelt rum, f.eks. i et kontorbyggeri.
Slut med at bruge stige
Førhen skulle montøren op på en stige for manuelt at konfigurere den controller, der styrer luftstrømmene fra panelet. Samtidig skulle han håndtere et måleapparat, der fortæller hvilke parametre man skal tage hensyn til i det pågældende rum. Nu kan han udføre opgaven fra gulvet med sin smartphone. Den nye styringskomponent gør arbejdet lettere og hurtigere, samtidig med at den tekniske dokumentation nu foregår automatisk.
Tryksensor til finjustering
– Systemet består af en controller indbygget i det loftmonterede ventilationspanel, forklarer projektleder Jette Freiberg, EKTOS.
– Controlleren rummer bl.a. en tryksensor, der måler lufttrykket og leverer de data, som bruges til den endelige finjustering af de to motorer, der styrer spjældet i ventilationspanelet.
– Desuden har vi designet den smartphone-app, som montøren bruger til at finjustere systemet under montage. Kommunikationen mellem smartphone og controller foregår via Bluetooth.
Erfaring afgørende
TROX Auranor valgte EKTOS til opgaven pga. EKTOS’ store erfaring med design af styringer til HVAC systemer (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) og trådløse forbindelser i indoor-miljøer. Desuden kunne EKTOS håndtere hele projektet in-house, fra idegenerering over udvikling til test og produktion.
– Den nye styringskomponent skulle passe direkte ind i TROX’ eksisterende systemer, forklarer Jette Freiberg.
– Desuden blev vi bedt om at udvikle et nyt og innovativt interface til installatøren. Sammen med kunden specificerede vi løsningen og her var det især vigtigt, at brugeroplevelsen var naturlig og intuitiv. Samtidig skulle den trådløse forbindelse mellem smartphone og controller være sikker og stabil.
– Vores hardware-ingeniører har mange års erfaring med optimering af antenner i indoor-miljøer og vi har egne faciliteter til antenneudmåling. Derfor kunne vi allerede med den første prototype sikre god forbindelse, så brugeroplevelsen kunne testes i det konkrete miljø montøren arbejder i, når han skal kalibrere systemet.
Stram tidsplan
Det nye system skulle præsenteres på en messe få måneder efter projektstart. Derfor var en stram tidsplan en ekstra udfordring, der skulle håndteres. Her kunne EKTOS drage fordel af sine in-house prototyping faciliteter og faciliteter til CE-mærkning og amerikansk produktgodkendelse. Efterfølgende har EKTOS taget ansvar for serieproduktion af den nye controller hos sit søsterselskab TECHTO Electronics i Ukraine, inklusive fremstilling af udstyr til programmering og sluttest.
Fokus på fremdrift

– Vi har fået en løsning på et højt teknisk niveau. Desuden har projektet og produktet holdt sig inden for de aftalte rammer, både med hensyn til tidsplan og økonomi. Undervejs har vi haft et vældig struktureret og godt samarbejde med fokus på fremdrift. EKTOS har håndteret alting meget professionelt, f.eks. når der skulle laves ændringer.
