Company

JH Agro, based in Denmark, specializes in innovative solutions for animal husbandry, including the JHminiStrø robot, which distributes feed and bedding materials to farm animals like cows, pigs, and chickens.

With over 300 robots operating in Denmark and beyond, JH Agro is dedicated to enhancing farm efficiency through automation. Their longstanding partnership with EKTOS has been pivotal in developing both the first and second generations of the JHminiStrø system.

Challenge

When JH Agro initiated the JHminiStrø project, they faced challenges in electronics development and production. Their in-house capabilities were limited, particularly in creating robust, reliable systems that could operate 24/7 in harsh stable environments filled with dust, dirt, and ammonia.

Ensuring the electronics’ durability while also meeting farmers’ needs for usability and functionality was crucial.

Solution

EKTOS stepped in to support JH Agro by taking over the production of the circuit boards for the original JHminiStrø and later developing the complete electronics for the new version.

EKTOS collaborated closely with JH Agro to gather requirements and integrate them into a comprehensive performance specification. They encased the electronics securely, including the touch screen used for programming, ensuring resilience against the demanding environment.

The latest version of JHminiStrø now accommodates up to five robots on one rail system, features wireless control for switch tracks, and allows for remote support, all while enhancing user experience with a new 10-inch touchscreen interface.

Results

The partnership has not only improved the JHminiStrø’s functionality but has also led to significant technical advancements. The robots can now manage complex tasks more efficiently, thanks to a mesh network of sensors developed in collaboration with Danish company NeoCortec.

Additionally, JH Agro and EKTOS are currently working on the JHacidificationNH4+ system, which uses innovative control software to enhance slurry acidification processes. This new software will handle 12 strings, doubling the previous capacity and offering a range of new features.

As Lars Forbech noted, “EKTOS has helped improve the new version of JHminiStrø in a number of ways.”

The collaboration exemplifies how trust and expertise can lead to meaningful advancements in agricultural technology.
